How Do You Prepare Your Kia Vehicle for a Safe Spring Road Trip in Stratford, ON?
The snow in Stratford has finally gone, the roads are now clear, and it feels like a good time to start planning road trips out of the city again. But, after a long winter, your Kia has usually taken a bit of a beating from cold starts, salt-covered roads, and many potholes along the way. Before you pack up and head out on a spring road trip, it’s worth doing a full check to make sure everything is working in order. Read on with our team at Stratford Kia as we take a closer look at this Kia spring checklist, including tires, brakes, fluids, battery, lights, as well as air conditioning.

Spring Road Trip Kia Vehicle Checklist
1. Tires
First things first, check your tire pressure when the tires are cold, ideally when the car hasn’t been driven for a few hours. The recommended PSI for your Kia is usually listed on the driver-side door sticker, not on the tire. Next is tread depth. Most tires come with built-in tread wear indicators, which are small raised bars in the grooves of the tire. When the tread wears down and becomes level with those bars, that’s a sign the tire is nearing the end of its usable life. Also, if you switched to winter tires, now is the time to think about putting your all-season or summer tires back on.
2. Brakes
Inspecting the brake system is another task on the list. Start with how the pedal feels. When you press it, it should feel firm, not soft or like you have to push further to get the same stopping power. A change in pedal feel can sometimes point to air in the brake lines or worn hydraulic components. Then, pay attention to sound. With the windows down at low speeds, listen for any squealing or grinding. A high-pitched squeak usually means the brake pads are getting low. Most pads should be replaced when there is around 3 to 4 mm of material remaining. As well,. you might also notice vibration through the steering wheel when slowing down from higher speeds. That can be a sign of warped rotors, which often happens after repeated heavy braking or prolonged exposure to cold-weather conditions. If you’re not sure how to measure or inspect any of these components, Stratford Kia is always here to assist.
3. Air Conditioning
Most people only realize how important the air conditioning is once they’re stuck in hot, slow-moving traffic. But, all you have to do is turn it on, set it to the coldest setting, and see how quickly it starts blowing cool air. If it’s taking a while to cool down, or it never really gets cold, that’s usually a sign something is acting up in the system. Diagnosis or repair can get a bit more technical and often requires specialized equipment to test refrigerant levels or pressure readings, so it’s usually best to leave A/C concerns to the pros at Stratford Kia.
4. Battery
Spring is also a good time to check in on your battery before you head out on any longer drives. Pop the hood and take a look at the terminals. If you see any white or greenish buildup around the posts, that’s corrosion. It can affect electrical flow and sometimes cause slow starts or random power issues. Clean it off and tighten the connections if needed. It’s also important to test the battery voltage if you have a multimeter. A healthy Kia battery should sit around 12.6 volts when the engine is off. Once the engine is running, you should see somewhere between 13.7 and 14.7 volts. Anything consistently below that range can be a sign the battery is getting weak.
5. Lights
The final step before heading out on a spring road trip is to take a few minutes to walk around your Kia and check that every light is working properly, including the headlights, high beams, turn signals, brake lights, and reverse lights. If you’ve got someone around, have them help you while you cycle through everything. If not, you can back up close to a wall or garage door, as the brake lights will reflect clearly enough to see what’s working. If anything is flickering, dim, or not working at all, it’s usually better to get it diagnosed at Stratford Kia.
